Baby Showers: Who, When, What to Wear & Your Registry

Baby’s on its way so it’s time to celebrate! In most countries, family and friends get together to shower the soon-to-be mother with presents to celebrate mother and child and welcome the women’s journey into motherhood. From showers for a first time mother, to a sprinkles party for a second time mother, a co-ed shower, or even a sip and see. These days anything goes.

First, determine who will plan the shower. It can be anyone from family, friends to a co-worker. Though you can host your own shower, it’s still considered unusual.  Generally either a sister, mother-in-law, or the guest of honor’s mother will host or co-host the event.

There has been much debate as to when the baby shower should be held. Rule of thumb says between when the mother to be is 6-8 months. Some say definitely later so that the pregnancy can be well along but others say the earlier the better to insure baby will not make an early appearance. Personally I had my baby shower when I was 6 months. I felt well enough to attend and I felt beautiful because I wasn’t super huge yet but everyone is different and you should make sure the date works best for the mother to be. Also, take in consideration if people need to travel, providing plenty of notice in advance for travel arrangements.

Once a date is set, the real planning will begin. The theme should delight the guest of honor and represent the style and taste of the expectant mother. There is no rule stating that the colors must be strictly pastel so go wild and have fun, all within reason of course. You want to make sure the mother to be will love her shower and enjoy herself at the same time. Pregnancy can be emotional and you want her to feel pampered and special during this important day.

Guest in attendance will range from family and friends of the expecting mother’s family to the family and friends of the soon to be father! Sometimes if decided, even the father and his friends will also attend the baby shower. You will want to make sure all of the expecting mother’s closest friends are also invited. Having her write a list and provide addresses for everyone she would like to see attend is always a great idea in order to insure no one is left out.

Now the fun part, when preparing for your shower you will accumulate a list of needs and wants for when baby has made their arrival. This is called your registry. From personal experience, I would recommend reaching out to friends and family who have had children and ask them what you will really need. I pinned and googled and found a number of items which I included in my list or was dead set on thinking I needed and in the end I didn’t use half of it. To insure you get what you really need for baby, asking other mothers will provide you with a list of the necessities. People will also send gigts you may have not necessarily registered for but you will come to realize you ended up needing! Registering with your partner can become a bonding experience making it more real that soon your party of two will be a party of three!

Last but not least, your dress! Its super important you feel beautiful and comfortable at the same time. You may choose to go with a solid dress or a bold print to compliment your theme. Whichever the case, if you’re looking for the perfect dress, PinkBlush Maternity has you covered. Shop our exclusive collection of Maternity Dresses specifically designed for Baby Showers!! This moment will be documented by tons of photos so make sure the dress you say yes to, is one you absolutely love and will love forever.

When you shower date finally arrives, relax and enjoy.  Have fun participating in baby themed games and fill up on delicious food and sweet treats. Remember to get tons of photos of all your guests and appoint a close friend or family member to write down gifts along with the name of the person who brought it so you may send out thank you cards. It’s always also a nice gesture to send your hosts a thank you card, small gift or flowers to thank them for planning what you will always remember as the perfect shower.

Exercise during pregnancy is a subject that I’m very passionate about. The benefits are numerous! Studies show it can make the pregnancy journey, labor, + delivery easier.

A common misconception is that women who are inactive before they were pregnant cannot start an exercise program. It is important to talk to your OB about this, but most would suggest that you do start! If you are thinking of becoming pregnant + you currently don’t exercise…I would say START NOW! Pregnancy will likely go smoother for you.

Let’s go through the benefits!

Benefits of Exercising During Pregnancy

  • Maintaining or increasing cardiovascular fitness: You can increase your body’s endurance + stamina, + increase your energy levels. These are huge benefits for pregnancy, labor, + delivery.
  • Increase muscular endurance: I like to think of labor and delivery as an athletic event. You are going to need a lot of stamina and use the correct muscles with the correct force. The right pregnancy routine can help with this!
  • Increasing muscular strength: Strength training during pregnancy yields lots of benefits! Including decreasing your risk of ligament and joint injury (loosening effects of relaxin and progesterone are at work against you), preparing you for the tasks of being a mom (think: picking baby up, car seats, diaper bags, shopping bags, etc!), + it helps to take strain off your lower back + pelvic floor (important for you to minimize postural issues + remain as comfortable as possible). I can tell you from helping with my niece, those little babes get heavy fast + you have a lot to take with you when you’re leaving the house!
  • Improved posture: Not only with improved posture help you to look better, but also lessens the chance that you’ll have the common neck and back pregnancy pains. It also helps to make breathing easier (you’ll realize the importance of this in the 3rd trimester).
  • Improved support of pelvic organs: Yes, we’re going there. Exercise helps to improve and strengthen the pelvic floor which can help you to minimize or prevent urinary incontinence and bladder or uterine prolapse (eeks!). Very important point here ladies!
  • Decrease pregnancy discomforts: Exercise helps to keep the minor discomforts of pregnancy at bay. It has been proven to help decrease the occurrence of varicose veins, back pain, leg cramps, swelling, and constipation.
  • Improved body composition:  Women that exercise during pregnancy gain less weight + body fat compared to pregnant women that do not.
  • Improved confidence: Of course weight gain + a big belly come with growing a human. Exercise has been proven to increase a women’s confidence. Since I’m eating well (of course with a few treats here and there) and regularly exercising, I know that my little babe needs the weight I’m gaining.

I don’t know about you, but all of those benefits make me want to hit the gym.

Not sure where to begin or what to do? Let’s go through some options:

Group training: Participating in a group class will not only provide you with exercise, but also a community of women that are also going through the experience of pregnancy. Mommas-to-be often find it to be an incredibly supportive environment. The classes should also be taught by someone that knows the proper modifications for every stage of pregnancy, so check that out before enrolling!

Personal training: I absolutely loved training pregnant women! It was so beautiful to see their journey + help build a strong foundation as they started to become more pregnant + headed toward labor + delivery. I would highly recommend finding someone that is certified in training pregnant women or at least has experience + knowledge of modifications. Personal training is great because you have one on one supervision + instruction.

Perinatal yoga: Another great form of group exercise for you! Yoga builds strength, flexibility, + overall well-being. Yoga can also be very beneficial in reducing low back pain + sciatica, which can be problems that plague pregnant women. Yoga focuses on teaching proper body alignment, which is SO important for everyday life + especially during pregnancy! I always leave class with a renewed perspective + yogi glow. I’ve also done online prenatal classes through Yoga International if you want to check that out!

Strength training: I’m a huge advocate of strength training + you read about the important benefits above! Even now, I’m doing a lot of the same lifts that I did pre-pregnancy. Squats, lunges, dead lifts, pull downs, rows, incline pushups, chest press, etc.

Squatting in my PinkBlush tank top.

Cardiovascular training: Good old cardio! Great to do as you’re going to need endurance for the challenging task of childbirth. Perhaps you already have a favorite variety. As you move into the third trimester (maybe even before), you may find that lower impact forms are more comfortable. For example, you might stop running + start incline walking or biking.

You’re expecting! Now what?

The longest 2 minutes you’ll probably ever have to wait will be for those two little lines! You’re expecting and over the moon with excitement, well let’s be real, I was excited and nervous all at the same time. If you’re a first time mother you may be thinking of all the things you will need to prepare for, maternity clothes, nursery décor, hospital bag and baby clothes. But the first step which may be the most important, is finding the perfect doctor!

So where to start? First, see if your regular gynecologist practices obstetrics as well. Say she doesn’t or she does but she practices natural births and you would like an epidural or you’d prefer giving birth at a birthing center and she only delivers at a hospital. Overwhelmed yet? Don’t be, we’ve all been there. It’s important to pick a doctor that you feel comfortable with and that fit’s with your birth plan. As a first time mother myself, I found the following tips helpful!

If your gynecologist doesn’t practice obstetrics like mine didn’t, decide whether you would like an OBGYN or a midwife. Don’t know what a midwife is? To be honest I didn’t either, I just knew I wanted to deliver in a hospital and that I wanted a doctor to deliver our son. Birthing plans differ for each mom, I know a few of my girlfriends who delivered with a midwife. A midwife is a trained health professional who helps healthy women during labor, delivery, and after the birth of their babies. Midwives may deliver babies at birthing centers or at home, but most can also deliver babies at a hospital. Whichever the preference be, once you know which type of provider you’d like to have, the next step begins!

For me, my next step was to ask my mom friends about their OBGYN and what their birthing experience was like. It’s always a good idea to get references, I even looked on yelp for local doctors in my area to see which had the best reviews. Once you have a list of possible doctors, if you’d like you can set up consultations which each. During this time, you can ask him or her questions to get more of a feel of their bedside manner and to see who you liked most. I found my OBGYN through my cousin who was due one month before me. I met with him and instantly felt comfortable. He was always available when we had questions or concerns, his c-section rate was really low and he ran a small practice so we knew he would definitely deliver our son. These are all questions you can ask during your consolation! Other ways to find an OBGYN is to call the local hospital in your area, their Labor and Delivery unit can recommend a good obstetrician. It’s recommended to call back a few times until you get the same name from different nurses! All options aside, you’ll want to make sure which ever provider you do decide to go with, they are covered by your insurance, who can also help you find a great OBGYN!

Finding a doctor who will deliver your most precious gift is never easy, but go with your gut. For me the birth of my son was the most incredible experience of my life. My doctor was a major part because I trusted him and felt confident when it came time to deliver my son. Looking back I was so happy with everything and with my choice!

We’re thrilled to hear such positive feedback about our products.

Like her modern and trendy style, The Blog XO is of a similar fashion with a chic design, and content featuring fashion, beauty, and some lifestyle posts. Read more of her blog post on PinkBlush Maternity here.

Pretty In Pink

At 39 weeks (!) Leah Mullett was ready for her baby boy or girl to arrive and at this point in her pregnancy, craved something soft and comfortable that would not only cover her bump but also still keep her cool during the warm summer season. She opted for a gorgeous maternity maxi dress in a bold, beautiful hue. A dress like this is perfect for the later months of your pregnancy because it is cinched right under the bust to allow you to grow from week to week while the fabric lays perfectly draped over your bump.

Maxis make the perfect wardrobe essential thanks to its always flattering and versatile style. You can pair a basic one with any accessory or shoe to make it your own for any occasion. We love how it moves day to night so you can stay comfortable while doing a variety of activities whether it’s running errands or saved as your favorite maternity date night outfit. We all want something in our closet that we know we look just as beautiful in as we feel during pregnancy. But what’s even better, when we have one of those days where we not feeling our best, it still manages to change our mind. As soon as you slip into one of these beauties, it’s hard to step out.

Date Night Done Right

Happy (Almost) Weekend!

Your first summer date night is here and you have a huge selection of cute maternity clothes to look amazing in tonight but you just can’t decide exactly what style you’re going for. We already know our go-to look for nights like these. Luckily, these stylish maternity maxi dresses were made for every woman’s individual style while making sure you stay cool for a night out.

Even with so many styles, prints, and textures, as soon as we saw this flattering draped style and bold print, we knew we had to have this maternity maxi dress in our lives. Perfect for a casually feminine day-time look but easily transitioned into an effortlessly chic date night outfit. And who wouldn’t want a comfortable and stylish wear all day long? The only work you may want to do it a quick makeup of hair touch up but even then, a loose, laid back look works perfectly with this ensemble.

A playful, loose bottom and cinched top are not only comfortable (especially in this crazy heat!) but are so flattering. With so many prints and brilliant hues, it’s easily to fill your closet with them all and have one for every day of summer. As soon as this soft, cool, and forgiving style slips over your shoulders, it will take every ounce of self-control to not just buy them all.

You can style your date night with a statement necklace and flats with a clutch and you’re good to go. You’ll be surprised how easily this look comes together right before your eyes. Seconds later, you are ready for a fun-filled night.

Simple Ways to Make Mornings Easier

Mornings are hard enough as it is and Monday mornings? Forget about it. If you tell us you have a way to shorten our getting ready time to only fifteen minutes we’ll try anything. As long as it keeps us in bed a little longer.

One tip that is tried and true is putting your outfit together the night before. Instead of dragging everything out of your closet and turning your room into a tornado’s destruction path, carefully lay out your picks before you go to bed. We can’t even begin to describe how much this helps. It may take some getting used to but this is the number one time saver. When you get this down, everything else is easy. A maternity jean and maternity top are the perfect go to look for an everyday casual look while maternity pants and a maternity blouse are great for a day at work. Dress up any of these looks with a statement necklace and that’s all it takes. Don’t forget your maternity cardigan for your chilly office.

FotorCreated1

IMG_94771111

Take your shower the night before. Seriously the best idea and if you put your wet hair in braids, curlers or a ballerina bun, you wake up with your hair already done! It’s a win win. When you wake up, all you have to do is a couple touch-ups if that’s even necessary, put in some texturing spray, and you are set.

For everyday makeup, all you really need is a bit of power, mascara, and lipstick/gloss. Control your shine throughout the day with blotting wipes or a travel powder compact. For the midday boot, a retouch on your lips will do the trick. It’s amazing what a bold lip color will do. You can go from day to night so easily.
