Am I Having A Boy Or Girl? Fun Ways To Tell!

Screenshot (355)

pc : Alice Kerley of Lone Star Looking Glass

Wondering if your little bundle of joy will be a boy or girl? Here are some fun and wacky old wives’ tales said to be able to predict the sex of your baby!

  1. According to an old wives’ tale your baby’s heart rate can be used to predict the gender. Apparently, girls have faster heartbeats than boys. Above 140 ppm means you’re having a girl, and lower than 140 bpm means it’s a boy.
  2. Rumor has it that if you are carrying your baby high, it’s a girl. Carrying low? Stock up on blue.
  3. Legends say that if you are having a little girl, she’ll steal your beauty. So, if you’ve got acne and other not-so-pretty skin blemishes, you’ve got a little princess coming your way.
  4. Some say craving sweets indicates a baby girl is on the way, if salty and sour is on your crave list start breaking out the blue!
  5. Here is one of the most if not the most well-known wives ‘tales for gender predicting! Take your wedding ring and tie it to a string. Hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circle, a little guy’s in your future. If it goes back and forth, you’ve got a girl. (Caught in the act, I totally tried this! According to this, we’re expecting a baby girl! Stay tuned to find out!)
  6. They say if you have dreams that you are having a boy, you will have a girl. If you dream about having a girl, it will be a boy. Dreams show the opposite of what you are having. (Not sure how accurate this could be, with my son, I was constantly dreaming of giving birth to a boy and sure enough it was a boy. This pregnancy I have been waiting for a dream about what we’ll have and the other night I finally had a dream of a baby girl. I think when you dream of gender it’s your intuition telling you. We’ll see!)
  7. Show me your hands! When a pregnant woman is asked to show her hands, it’s a boy if she keeps her palms down and a girl if she shows her palms up.
  8. It is said that when you can only think of specific names for a boy or a girl, you will have that particularly baby.
  9. Ok, this one has got to be my favorite, if the dad-to-be gains weight while you are pregnant, it’s a girl. If he doesn’t gain weight, you’re having a boy. (My husband recently began to work out again, which mean someone feels they have been putting on the pounds besides myself lol!)

We hope these wives’ tales provided a little insight but most of all fun! Share your prediction stories with us at media@pinkblushmaternity.com! And don’t forget, no matter the occasion, our maternity clothes deliver style for the mommy-to-be. Dress up your bump with PinkBlushMaternity.com!

Baby Showers: Who, When, What to Wear & Your Registry

Baby’s on its way so it’s time to celebrate! In most countries, family and friends get together to shower the soon-to-be mother with presents to celebrate mother and child and welcome the women’s journey into motherhood. From showers for a first time mother, to a sprinkles party for a second time mother, a co-ed shower, or even a sip and see. These days anything goes.

First, determine who will plan the shower. It can be anyone from family, friends to a co-worker. Though you can host your own shower, it’s still considered unusual.  Generally either a sister, mother-in-law, or the guest of honor’s mother will host or co-host the event.

There has been much debate as to when the baby shower should be held. Rule of thumb says between when the mother to be is 6-8 months. Some say definitely later so that the pregnancy can be well along but others say the earlier the better to insure baby will not make an early appearance. Personally I had my baby shower when I was 6 months. I felt well enough to attend and I felt beautiful because I wasn’t super huge yet but everyone is different and you should make sure the date works best for the mother to be. Also, take in consideration if people need to travel, providing plenty of notice in advance for travel arrangements.

Once a date is set, the real planning will begin. The theme should delight the guest of honor and represent the style and taste of the expectant mother. There is no rule stating that the colors must be strictly pastel so go wild and have fun, all within reason of course. You want to make sure the mother to be will love her shower and enjoy herself at the same time. Pregnancy can be emotional and you want her to feel pampered and special during this important day.

Guest in attendance will range from family and friends of the expecting mother’s family to the family and friends of the soon to be father! Sometimes if decided, even the father and his friends will also attend the baby shower. You will want to make sure all of the expecting mother’s closest friends are also invited. Having her write a list and provide addresses for everyone she would like to see attend is always a great idea in order to insure no one is left out.

Now the fun part, when preparing for your shower you will accumulate a list of needs and wants for when baby has made their arrival. This is called your registry. From personal experience, I would recommend reaching out to friends and family who have had children and ask them what you will really need. I pinned and googled and found a number of items which I included in my list or was dead set on thinking I needed and in the end I didn’t use half of it. To insure you get what you really need for baby, asking other mothers will provide you with a list of the necessities. People will also send gigts you may have not necessarily registered for but you will come to realize you ended up needing! Registering with your partner can become a bonding experience making it more real that soon your party of two will be a party of three!

Last but not least, your dress! Its super important you feel beautiful and comfortable at the same time. You may choose to go with a solid dress or a bold print to compliment your theme. Whichever the case, if you’re looking for the perfect dress, PinkBlush Maternity has you covered. Shop our exclusive collection of Maternity Dresses specifically designed for Baby Showers!! This moment will be documented by tons of photos so make sure the dress you say yes to, is one you absolutely love and will love forever.

When you shower date finally arrives, relax and enjoy.  Have fun participating in baby themed games and fill up on delicious food and sweet treats. Remember to get tons of photos of all your guests and appoint a close friend or family member to write down gifts along with the name of the person who brought it so you may send out thank you cards. It’s always also a nice gesture to send your hosts a thank you card, small gift or flowers to thank them for planning what you will always remember as the perfect shower.

Sweet Ol’ Second Trimester

IMG_6043

I cannot begin to compare how different my current pregnancy has been from when I was pregnant with my son, Graham. Has karma come back to get me because my first pregnancy was so easy and so enjoyable?? Thus far, this pregnancy has been anything but easy to say the least. First trimester for me was filled with horrible migraines, uncontrollable morning sickness and exhaustion that will defeat any idea you may have had in hopes of being productive that day. And did I mention I have a three year old toddler? Let me clarify, an active, on the go, toddler. So as you can see my first trimester was quite a difficult feat, but there is sun light at the end of the tunnel. We have finally made it to the second trimester and with that I have begun to find my balance once again. Sound the happy dance music!

Second trimester for most is when you’ll most enjoy your pregnancy. At this stage you are showing but not enough to where you’ve become to waddle and have lost sight of your toes. You can still wear your pre-pregnancy clothes but for me, I was wearing maternity clothes very early on. With this pregnancy I began showing almost immediately, which was good and bad. Good because I could wear maternity dresses every day which really kept my comfortable level on point but bad because here in Chicago it’s like 90 degrees and humid as heck and to cool off we generally will go to the lake and at this stage it’s like is she pregnant or just fat? Um I am pregnant people, now where’s my ice cream?!?

So now on to the good part about welcoming your second trimester! Let’s all say it together ENERGY, yes ladies, it does come back! I am still battling morning sickness but it’s so nice to wake up and feel somewhat normal. I can feel my train of thought start to straighten out and my list of to-do’s dwindle down as I am able to accomplish more and more each day. This is a huge success for a mom to be with a toddler. Another bonus, I am finally getting my appetite back! No longer are the days, well full days of being too nauseous to eat. I still start my morning with a juice before I get out of bed to ease the morning sickness but now I am able to fit in breakfast between my morning routine and by lunch it’s a go for grubbing! Now when I was pregnant with my son I had just lost 30lbs because my husband and I were married 4 months before we got pregnant so the total weight I gained with my son was only 20lbs. With this pregnancy I’ve started out already 20lbs heavier so this time around I have to be more mindful of making my meal options healthy and try and stay clear of sweet cravings. My OBGYN mentioned that generally you gain the same amount you did with the first but so far I have been weighting about the same not having gained or lost which I think is part to the morning sickness and just really not being able to eat. However, as with my first exercise was a part of my daily routine so I will be adding that soon, most likely during nap time as it may be challenging to work out with my son.  Do you have tips for working out while pregnant in your second trimester? We’d love to hear them, email them now to media@pinkblushmaterntiy.com!

(Fun side note: Cravings 1st Pregnancy vs 2nd:  With my son all I wanted was authentic bean and cheese burritos with lots of onions and hot wings! This pregnancy I am obsessed with sushi (cooked of course), crispy chicken strips and subway sandwiches. What are you craving?)

Sleep at this point has been manageable. I am a huge tummy sleeper so that’s been something I’ve had to adjust too. One thing that’s constant for me with pregnancy is that my feet get very achy by the end of the day and even if it’s super cold in our room my feet will be the one thing that will be on fire.  So that’s been annoying and uncomfortable. Looking forward to purchasing a pregnancy pillow very soon, last time I just bought a body pillow but this time around I think I ’am going to invest in an actual pregnancy pillow from either Snoogle or Boppy. My Boppy was a huge lifesaver for breastfeeding and will be on my baby list again!

Exciting things to look forward to in your second trimester has got to be finding out the baby’s gender hands down. What’s weird this time is that I am really torn down the middle as to if we are having a boy or girl. I just knew with our first but this time I really have no idea. Part of me feels it’s sort of a defense since we would really love a baby girl so I am not getting my hopes up and of course we would be blessed beyond belief to have either a girl or boy but you can dream right? At 14 weeks we still have about 6 more weeks until we find out the gender. Both of our families are so excited in hoping it will be a girl so we’ve decided to do a gender reveal to up the anticipation! This was not really a thing when we had our son but in the 3 years since gender reveals have become a huge moment shared! It’s actually exciting to know we will not find out until our entire family finds out as well, and it’s been fun pinning around for ideas of how to make the big announcement. And of course I will have to have a PinkBlush Maternity dress for the reveal so stay posted for what dress I picked and how we decided to share the news!

All in all, it’s crazy what your body can do when you are making a baby. It’s incredible and once you’ve past the sickness part, if you’re lucky, you will really begin to enjoy the journey. Remember embrace the glow and we’ll see you at our next update!

Tips To Beat Morning Sickness

1st Trimester:  Tips to help ease the pain of morning sickness during pregnancy!

If only morning sickness was just related to the mornings and didn’t feel like the worse hangover you’ve ever had! Here’s a list of our favorite home remedies suggested by fellow moms to help cope with nausea during the early months of pregnancy!

  • Lemon Water- The natural calming effect of lemon is a great way to reduce nausea, squeeze a fresh lemon and mix the juice with a glass of water (You can also try sparkling water to help with your upset stomach). Drink it every morning to prevent nausea. You can also simply take a bite of fresh-cut lemon or chew lemon-flavored candy. Even smelling fresh lemon peels can ease morning sickness symptoms.
  • Ginger- Ginger root can give relief from nausea and vomiting. Sucking on a small piece of ginger or chewing a ginger candy can also give quick relief from nausea. I actually bought a jar of pickled ginger that you get when you eat sushi, I keep it in my fridge and when I feel sick I will nibble on a few pieces and it has really helped.
  • Crackers- Try keeping a few crackers by your bed and slowly eat a few before you get up in the morning.
  • Juice Boxes- Recently at my OBGYN appointment the ultra sound technician recommended keeping a Capri Sun or any type of juice box on your night stand and to drink it before you sit up each morning.  She swears by this after having 5 children, this will help get your sugar levels up and keep the nausea away.

What causes morning sickness? No one knows for sure, some say it is triggered by the increase of the pregnancy hormone HGC. However, not all pregnant women experience morning sickness. I have to admit that with my first pregnancy I never did and was one of those women who loved being pregnant. However this time around I have had the full morning sickness experience! These remedies have really provided me with some relief from the nausea.  And remember, although it’s uncomfortable, nausea is just a sign that all is going well with you and your baby, and that your baby is growing and developing just as it should! Pregnancy is one of the biggest things that could possibly happen in a couple’s or family’s life, so if you’re going to tell the world, why not do it in an adorable, silly or creative way!

Beauty, Lifestyle, Maternity

You’re expecting! Now what?

The longest 2 minutes you’ll probably ever have to wait will be for those two little lines! You’re expecting and over the moon with excitement, well let’s be real, I was excited and nervous all at the same time. If you’re a first time mother you may be thinking of all the things you will need to prepare for, maternity clothes, nursery décor, hospital bag and baby clothes. But the first step which may be the most important, is finding the perfect doctor!

So where to start? First, see if your regular gynecologist practices obstetrics as well. Say she doesn’t or she does but she practices natural births and you would like an epidural or you’d prefer giving birth at a birthing center and she only delivers at a hospital. Overwhelmed yet? Don’t be, we’ve all been there. It’s important to pick a doctor that you feel comfortable with and that fit’s with your birth plan. As a first time mother myself, I found the following tips helpful!

If your gynecologist doesn’t practice obstetrics like mine didn’t, decide whether you would like an OBGYN or a midwife. Don’t know what a midwife is? To be honest I didn’t either, I just knew I wanted to deliver in a hospital and that I wanted a doctor to deliver our son. Birthing plans differ for each mom, I know a few of my girlfriends who delivered with a midwife. A midwife is a trained health professional who helps healthy women during labor, delivery, and after the birth of their babies. Midwives may deliver babies at birthing centers or at home, but most can also deliver babies at a hospital. Whichever the preference be, once you know which type of provider you’d like to have, the next step begins!

For me, my next step was to ask my mom friends about their OBGYN and what their birthing experience was like. It’s always a good idea to get references, I even looked on yelp for local doctors in my area to see which had the best reviews. Once you have a list of possible doctors, if you’d like you can set up consultations which each. During this time, you can ask him or her questions to get more of a feel of their bedside manner and to see who you liked most. I found my OBGYN through my cousin who was due one month before me. I met with him and instantly felt comfortable. He was always available when we had questions or concerns, his c-section rate was really low and he ran a small practice so we knew he would definitely deliver our son. These are all questions you can ask during your consolation! Other ways to find an OBGYN is to call the local hospital in your area, their Labor and Delivery unit can recommend a good obstetrician. It’s recommended to call back a few times until you get the same name from different nurses! All options aside, you’ll want to make sure which ever provider you do decide to go with, they are covered by your insurance, who can also help you find a great OBGYN!

Finding a doctor who will deliver your most precious gift is never easy, but go with your gut. For me the birth of my son was the most incredible experience of my life. My doctor was a major part because I trusted him and felt confident when it came time to deliver my son. Looking back I was so happy with everything and with my choice!
