I cannot begin to compare how different my current pregnancy has been from when I was pregnant with my son, Graham. Has karma come back to get me because my first pregnancy was so easy and so enjoyable?? Thus far, this pregnancy has been anything but easy to say the least. First trimester for me was filled with horrible migraines, uncontrollable morning sickness and exhaustion that will defeat any idea you may have had in hopes of being productive that day. And did I mention I have a three year old toddler? Let me clarify, an active, on the go, toddler. So as you can see my first trimester was quite a difficult feat, but there is sun light at the end of the tunnel. We have finally made it to the second trimester and with that I have begun to find my balance once again. Sound the happy dance music!
Second trimester for most is when you’ll most enjoy your pregnancy. At this stage you are showing but not enough to where you’ve become to waddle and have lost sight of your toes. You can still wear your pre-pregnancy clothes but for me, I was wearing maternity clothes very early on. With this pregnancy I began showing almost immediately, which was good and bad. Good because I could wear maternity dresses every day which really kept my comfortable level on point but bad because here in Chicago it’s like 90 degrees and humid as heck and to cool off we generally will go to the lake and at this stage it’s like is she pregnant or just fat? Um I am pregnant people, now where’s my ice cream?!?
So now on to the good part about welcoming your second trimester! Let’s all say it together ENERGY, yes ladies, it does come back! I am still battling morning sickness but it’s so nice to wake up and feel somewhat normal. I can feel my train of thought start to straighten out and my list of to-do’s dwindle down as I am able to accomplish more and more each day. This is a huge success for a mom to be with a toddler. Another bonus, I am finally getting my appetite back! No longer are the days, well full days of being too nauseous to eat. I still start my morning with a juice before I get out of bed to ease the morning sickness but now I am able to fit in breakfast between my morning routine and by lunch it’s a go for grubbing! Now when I was pregnant with my son I had just lost 30lbs because my husband and I were married 4 months before we got pregnant so the total weight I gained with my son was only 20lbs. With this pregnancy I’ve started out already 20lbs heavier so this time around I have to be more mindful of making my meal options healthy and try and stay clear of sweet cravings. My OBGYN mentioned that generally you gain the same amount you did with the first but so far I have been weighting about the same not having gained or lost which I think is part to the morning sickness and just really not being able to eat. However, as with my first exercise was a part of my daily routine so I will be adding that soon, most likely during nap time as it may be challenging to work out with my son. Do you have tips for working out while pregnant in your second trimester? We’d love to hear them, email them now to firstname.lastname@example.org!
(Fun side note: Cravings 1st Pregnancy vs 2nd: With my son all I wanted was authentic bean and cheese burritos with lots of onions and hot wings! This pregnancy I am obsessed with sushi (cooked of course), crispy chicken strips and subway sandwiches. What are you craving?)
Sleep at this point has been manageable. I am a huge tummy sleeper so that’s been something I’ve had to adjust too. One thing that’s constant for me with pregnancy is that my feet get very achy by the end of the day and even if it’s super cold in our room my feet will be the one thing that will be on fire. So that’s been annoying and uncomfortable. Looking forward to purchasing a pregnancy pillow very soon, last time I just bought a body pillow but this time around I think I ’am going to invest in an actual pregnancy pillow from either Snoogle or Boppy. My Boppy was a huge lifesaver for breastfeeding and will be on my baby list again!
Exciting things to look forward to in your second trimester has got to be finding out the baby’s gender hands down. What’s weird this time is that I am really torn down the middle as to if we are having a boy or girl. I just knew with our first but this time I really have no idea. Part of me feels it’s sort of a defense since we would really love a baby girl so I am not getting my hopes up and of course we would be blessed beyond belief to have either a girl or boy but you can dream right? At 14 weeks we still have about 6 more weeks until we find out the gender. Both of our families are so excited in hoping it will be a girl so we’ve decided to do a gender reveal to up the anticipation! This was not really a thing when we had our son but in the 3 years since gender reveals have become a huge moment shared! It’s actually exciting to know we will not find out until our entire family finds out as well, and it’s been fun pinning around for ideas of how to make the big announcement. And of course I will have to have a PinkBlush Maternity dress for the reveal so stay posted for what dress I picked and how we decided to share the news!
All in all, it’s crazy what your body can do when you are making a baby. It’s incredible and once you’ve past the sickness part, if you’re lucky, you will really begin to enjoy the journey. Remember embrace the glow and we’ll see you at our next update!
