DIY Milk Bath Photoshoot

We’ve all seen the pictures. Those GORGEOUS mamas in a bathtub of milk, surrounded by the perfectly placed flowers. Who would have thought milk baths were so incredibly ethereal when paired with an expecting mama?

Let us be the first to tell you that you don’t need some expensive photographer and location to recreate Pinterest’s favorite maternity shoot. Milk bath photoshoots are a lot easier than you may think! Keep reading to hear our tips here at PinkBlush on recreating the perfect at-home maternity shoot.

1. Lighting. This may be the most important factor in your photo (besides the mama, of course)! Natural lighting is the best route for these types of photos, as the light will reflect off the white-color of the water. If your bathtub is near a window, you’re all set. If not, look into borrowing a friends bathtub for a few hours in exchange for a movie night. If your budget allows and you’re really looking for a professional look, look into rentals online. Many showrooms and houses will rent out rooms for photoshoots. Be your own photographer! Having trouble finding a good space with perfect lighting? Softbox lighting or umbrella lighting will also do the trick. And if that doesn’t work, there’s always candle light!

2. Props. Of course you’ll need milk and flowers, but you have a few more options than you may realize. In terms of liquid, you can use either a gallon of milk or creamer. Both give off a similar effect, with the creamer being a little more opaque. You can even mix the two! In addition, both real and fake florals work great, so go with what you love!

3. Set Up. Once you have your props and your location, you’ll want to start the setup. Go ahead and fill the bathtub roughly halfway full. Be sure to use lukewarm water, or water that isn’t as hot to avoid any curdeling or discomfort for the mama! Once the water is in, fill the tub with a gallon of milk (or smaller amount of cream) and have your model lay in and position herself. Feel free to add more or less milk/water to get the look you want. Remember, you are the photographer today! Cut flowers just below the bud and place where you feel looks best. Have fun with it!

4. Most Important! A CLASSIC PinkBlush Gown! These dresses and gowns give off the perfect look for these type of shoots. Keep on reading to figure out which one is best for your shoot!

Ivory Lace Off Shoulder Maternity Photoshoot Gown/Dress

This gown is a CLASSIC. With the off the shoulder style, this dress will help highlight your glowing skin. The delicate lace will lay perfectly amongst the water, and of course the slit in the front will keep that belly as the main focus of the shoot!

Pink Strapless Lace Maternity Photoshoot Gown/Dress

This dress is a new take on the classic milk bath dress. While it is similar in style to the previous, we felt the need to include a dress that wasn’t white. Maybe you’re having a girl, or maybe you just love the pop of color, either way this dress will make a statement. The strapless style of this dress gives a more nude look under the water, so show off that skin mama! Add some pink and violet flowers, and you have yourself a stunning shoot.

White Lace Mesh Overlay Maternity Maxi Dress

Another classic PinkBlush dress to steal the show! Our Mesh Overlay Dresses are the perfect mix of modern and feminine styles. This is a great option for those mamas who are looking for a bit more coverage in the bath, while still maintaining that elegant and dreamy look. The lace overlay will float to the top of the water, but no skin will peep through. Sounds like the best of both worlds! Plus, this dress comes in a variety of colors, leaving you with endless possibilities.

Cream Lace Panel Open Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress

Finally, this Cream Lace Panel Open Shoulder dress is the perfect dress if you’re looking for something with less lace. The cream color will stand apart from the milk bath, making the dress pop! The off shoulder, ruffle detailing adds a soft, feminine touch to the dress. With the tiered bottom and lace panel, this dress will show the perfect amount of skin!
